Bartholomew Players: “Present Laughter” by Noël Coward
Wed 14 - Sat 17 May, 19:30 - 22:00
Sir Noël Peirce Coward (16 December 1899 – 26 March 1973) was an English playwright, composer, director, actor, producer, and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”.
Show more This year is one of what Coward’s estate has called C125 – a two-year celebration of the 125th year since his birth. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of Bartholomew Players and their first play was “Blithe Spirit” by Coward – so it was fitting to celebrate both of those things by performing “Present Laughter”.
Known as The Master by all who worked with him, Coward virtually invented the world’s perception of ‘Englishness’ with his plays and songs. He wrote many plays, and many centred around creating a leading role which he played himself in the opening productions, this play being no exception. “Present Laughter” was one of Coward’s personal favourites – and the Bartholomew Players hope that this evening you will see why. The play has stood the test of time very well as it still provides a very funny and amusing evening’s entertainment.
At the centre of his own universe sits matinee idol Garry Essendine: suave, hedonistic and too old, says his wife, to be having numerous affairs. His line in harmless infatuated debutantes is largely tolerated but playing closer to home is not. Just before he sets off on tour to Africa the full extent of his misdemeanours is discovered – and all hell breaks loose. Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter” premiered in the early years of the Second World War just as such privileged lives were threatened with fundamental social change, never to return on the same scale. Bartholomew Players are delighted to welcome some new members to the cast and crew, as well as some more familiar, experienced actors.
