Chiltern Railways announces Banbury Station upgrade plans

Work has begun to deliver improvement projects to customer facilities at Banbury Station.

Working alongside partners at Network Rail, Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council, Chiltern has been developing both short and long term plans to improve customer facilities at Banbury Station.

Initial projects due to be delivered this year include the creation of new male, female and accessible toilets in the lower ticket hall and the refurbishment of the café and overbridge area, creating a new Costa Coffee retail unit in partnership with Caterleisure. The station will also undergo a full internal repaint in early 2025.
Chiltern has also collaborated with community partners including Banbury Business Improvement District and the newly formed Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership to deliver a new community gallery at the station.

In addition to the customer-related projects, Chiltern Railways is creating new colleague accommodation on the west side of the station to provide facilities for train drivers located at Banbury depot.

The wider improvement plan for Banbury station includes Oxfordshire County Council creating a new access and public transport route from Tramway Road to the station. Work is set to begin later this year and more information can be viewed here.

The construction works may cause some disruption to customers over the next 12 months. This includes the closure of certain areas of the west side car park and some short-term disruption to customer facilities whilst the station projects are delivered.

Giles Conway, Area Manager for Oxfordshire at Chiltern Railways said:
“Banbury is a key commuter and leisure hub on the Chiltern Railways network and we are delighted to announce investment plans to improve the station’s customer facilities in the coming year.
“We are working alongside Oxfordshire County Council, Cherwell District Council, Caterleisure and community partners to make the station a warm and welcoming environment for rail users. These projects form part of a wider masterplan which will improve customer facilities at Banbury and better connect the station with key businesses and attractions in the town centre.”

Louise Hodgson, Joint Managing Director at Caterleisure said:
“Caterleisure are very pleased to be refurbishing the café at Banbury station, with new seating for up to fifty customers. Passengers will be able to purchase Costa coffee and enjoy the tasty hot and cold snacks offered by the Costa brand, whilst at the same time pick up a magazine, confectionery or travel accessories.”
