Lunchtime Talk: ‘Oxford(shire)’s contribution to D-Day’ with Brian Lowe

6 June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the largest seaborne invasion in history. The Museum of Oxford is delighted to present ‘Oxford(shire)’s contribution to D-Day’, an original talk by Brian Lowe, in commemoration of D-Day 80 and the historic efforts made by the people of Oxfordshire to the Normandy Landings.
Show more The talk will explore the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry’s direct involvement in the Landings; the history of the Slade Camp military training ground in Headington; naval intelligence at work in Oxford; the massive photo-reconnaissance operation that was flown from three Oxfordshire airfields; the take-offs from Harwell on 5 June 1944 that spearheaded the invasion; and the story of one Oxfordshire soldier whose career spanned the entirety of the Second World War.
This is a unique chance to learn about Oxford and Oxfordshire’s direct contributions to D-Day, 80 years on from the pivotal invasion that changed the course of the Second World War.
Brian Lowe is an Oxford Green-Badge Tour Guide and speaker on local history.
